"I'm round" announces a white circle and "I'm red" says a red swath, followed by "What can I be?" Illustrations of an apple and other round red objects provide answers, after which readers are prodded to imagine combining additional shapes and colors. The book's bravura illustrations (e.g., overlapping kite strings conjure a mobile by Alexander Calder) may inspire not just imagination but artistic output.

Bold, colorful collage illustrations incorporating brush-and-ink "scrawls" accompany an impressionistic text perfect for a childlike exploration of sounds, from the "tiny plop" of a raindrop to the roar of a lion to the best sound of all: the world waking up in the early morning: "Listen..." A welcome reissue of a book that's been out of print for more than forty years.

In poetic text, an offstage child narrator lists some of the many things she knows--from the most basic ("a cat goes meow") to the more abstract ("a leaf can be a ferry for a snail"). Paul Rand's simply composed, ahead-of-their-time illustrations don't look the least bit dated and perfectly reflect the concepts raised in the text.

Lonely Little 1 tries to find someone to play with but is rebuffed by all the numbers he meets. Finally, Little 1 meets a hoop who masquerades as a zero, and together they can pretend to be the number 10. Little 1 not only finds a friend but also demonstrates some simple addition along the way. This book is enhanced by Paul Rand's pioneering use of abstract shapes and clean, sharp lines.

"Words are how what you think inside comes out and how to remember what you might forget about." Ann Rand's playful text explains what nouns and verbs and adjectives are, without ever calling them by name. Paul Rand's abstract shapes and clean, sharp lines make this book a joy to look at.
